“Deer” and “With Dog” – two separate statues created by Michal Gabriel. They stand side by side. They are named after the Roman goddess of hunting, Diana, but their meaning is up to you. You can see them here on the corner of the National Theatre.
They are intriguing – almost whispering a story. Michal Gabriel is a well-known Czech sculptor. He’s a professor of fine arts and has taught in both Brno and Prague. Gabriel’s statues have been a favorite topic among art critics for years. While the statues are designed to seem realistic, Gabriel has a specific trick that he uses to make his sculptures unique. He purposefully obscures the details of the figures so that you can imagine them however you like.
The statues are meant to engage your senses, to make you contemplate as you walk by. So what story do you imagine they are telling?
