“Assumption of Our Lady” It echoes through the centuries. Here at the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, history breathes. This sacred space within the Strahov Monastery has transformed over centuries.

Originally, the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady began as a Romanesque basilica. This happened in the 12th century. A fire in 1258 swept through the monastery. The basilica was then rebuilt in the Gothic style. You can see how the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady has evolved.

Centuries later in the 18th century saw another dramatic shift. The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady was rebuilt. It embraced the ornate Baroque style we see today. Architect Anselmo Lurago designed a new facade with two towers. These towers reach over 50 meters high. Their Baroque domes are capped with lanterns.

Inside the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, the nave stretches. It measures 63 meters long, 10 meters wide and 16 meters high. In 1774 J. W. Neunhertz painted the vault. His frescoes depict Marian motifs. A. Palliardi created frescoes with scenes from the life of St. Norbert.

Speaking of St. Norbert he rests here. His remains are in an ebony coffin. It is housed within a gilded brass sarcophagus. They were brought to Prague in 1627.

The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady has magnificent organs dating back to 1746. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself played these organs during a visit to Prague. Gregorian chants fill the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady during services.

The Strahov Monastery including the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady is more than a religious site. It also plays a significant role in Czech culture. Concerts and cultural events are often held here. The Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians has been a functioning monastery since 1143.

The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady or Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady is a place where you can discover Czech history.
