Hidden within Prague’s bustling heart lies the Clementinum, a silent giant brimming with stories. The Clementinum isn’t just a building. It’s a journey through time, a fusion of architecture, knowledge, and music. Originally the site of a Dominican friary and the church of St. Clement, the Clementinum transformed dramatically in 1556. The Jesuits, newly arrived in Prague, were granted the land, and the Dominicans relocated. The Jesuits embarked on an ambitious project, spanning centuries, to create the complex we see today. The Clementinum became a hub of learning and faith. It included the Church of the Holy Saviour, three chapels, a printing works, schools, libraries, and living quarters. Architects from Bohemia and Italy contributed to the Clementinum’s eclectic blend of architectural styles. After the Jesuit expulsion in 1773, the Clementinum took on a new role. It housed the National Library and the Academy for Further Education. Many prominent Czech figures studied within its walls. The Academy ceased operations in 1883, and extensive renovations took place between 1928 and 1930 to adapt the space to the expanding National Library. Today, the Clementinum’s legacy continues. The National Library still resides here. Within its walls, you can discover the Clementinum Gallery, showcasing rare books. You can also tour the Jesuit Library and the Mirror Chapel, or climb the Astronomical Tower for panoramic city views. Mozart himself once played the organ in the Mirror Chapel, his music echoing through the same halls we can explore today. The Clementinum invites us to delve into centuries of history.
