He later studied in Munich. His artistic journey wasn’t without hardship. A personal tragedy left him deeply affected. He found solace and patronage with Count Bedřich Silva-Tarouca. Mánes spent twenty years at the count’s castle in Čechy pod Kosířem in Moravia. The Moravian countryside and its people became a constant source of inspiration. His paintings vividly capture the spirit of the region. He produced numerous portraits of people in traditional folk costumes. These works offer a glimpse into 19th-century Moravian life.
Mánes’s artistic contributions extended beyond his personal creations. He was involved in several artistic and patriotic societies. He even designed uniforms for Sokol a Czech athletic organization. His most prestigious commission was a round plate for the Old Town Hall astronomical clock. This plate depicts the signs of the zodiac.
