“Lost, are we?” a wizened old man chuckled, his eyes twinkling as he gestured towards the sprawling village before us. “Welcome to Ywā Thit, a place forgotten by time, yet brimming with stories.” Ywā Thit. Even the name sounded like a secret whispered on the wind. Our journey to Mandalay had taken an unexpected turn, leading us down dusty roads to this hidden gem. The old man, U Ba, claimed to be the village’s unofficial historian. He spoke of Ywā Thit’s connection to Mandalay, the great royal capital a mere whisper away. He explained that Ywā Thit, while technically a separate village, felt the pulse of Mandalay’s cultural heart. He recounted tales of artisans fleeing the destruction of the Second World War, seeking refuge in Ywā Thit’s quiet embrace. They brought with them skills passed down through generations, skills like silk weaving and wood carving. These traditions, he said, still thrived in Ywā Thit, a living testament to Mandalay’s enduring artistic spirit. U Ba then pointed towards Mandalay Hill, a distant sentinel visible from the village outskirts. He spoke of King Mindon’s prophecy, the founding of a Buddhist metropolis at the hill’s foot. Mandalay, he said, was built to fulfill this divine vision, becoming a beacon of faith and culture. Ywā Thit, in its own small way, shared in this sacred heritage. Many villagers made pilgrimages to Mandalay’s holy sites, carrying offerings and prayers. As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across Ywā Thit, U Ba invited us to witness a traditional dance performance. The rhythmic drums and graceful movements told stories of ancient kings and mythical creatures, echoing the rich cultural tapestry of Mandalay. Ywā Thit, it seemed, was not just a village, but a keeper of Mandalay’s memories.
