Let’s rewind to 1857. King Mindon, driven by prophecy and a desire for a more secure capital, chose this very spot for his new city: Mandalay. He wasn’t content with just a palace; he envisioned a city designed to his liking, a grand showcase of Burmese architecture and Buddhist piety. Amongst his ambitious projects, King Mindon decreed the construction of seven key structures. One of these was the Thu Da Mar Zayats, or public resthouse, a place where pilgrims and travelers, weary from their journeys, could find respite and shelter. It stood as a testament to the King’s devotion to Buddhism and his commitment to the welfare of his people.
