It’s home to Kuthodaw Pagoda, a place where the words of Buddha have been transformed into a breathtaking spectacle. Yet Kang Dor and its magnificent pagoda are a testament to the enduring power of faith. King Mindon, driven by prophecy and a desire for a secure capital, founded Mandalay in 1857. He envisioned Yet Kang Dor as a place where the teachings of Buddha would be preserved for eternity. His dream took physical form at Kuthodaw Pagoda. Imagine, 729 marble slabs, each housed in its own shrine. These slabs, meticulously carved, hold the entire Pali-language text of the Theravada Buddhist canon. The sheer scale of this undertaking is astonishing. The creation of this “world’s biggest book” was a herculean effort. It took skilled craftsmen years to complete. They carved both sides of the marble slabs, averaging around ten lines a day. The marble itself journeyed from a quarry 40 kilometers north of Mandalay, floating down the Ayeyarwady River before being transformed into the sacred scriptures.
