“This monastery whispers a tale of two kings,” our guide began, his voice low as we stood before the intricate teak structure of Shwenandaw Monastery. “It stands as a poignant reminder of a father’s legacy and a son’s grief.” The Shwenandaw Monastery, he explained, was not always a place of peaceful contemplation. It was once part of the opulent Royal Palace in Amarapura. When King Mindon Min passed away in 1878, his son, King Thibaw Min, ordered the dismantling and relocation of his father’s former quarters. He believed the space to be haunted by his father’s spirit. Thus, the richly-gilded apartment was carefully transported here, piece by piece, to its current location beside Mandalay Hill. Rebuilt in 1880 as a monastery, Shwenandaw, meaning “Golden Palace Monastery,” became a testament to King Mindon Min’s memory and a sanctuary for his son’s grief. The monastery’s exterior, with its ornately carved teak panels, speaks to the skill of Burmese artisans. Each panel depicts stories from Buddhist mythology, weathered by time but still captivating. Imagine the craftsmen, their tools meticulously carving these delicate details into the wood, their artistry a tribute to their faith. However, the real treasure of Shwenandaw lies within. Although the interior is bare compared to the exterior, the intricate carvings continue, covering every inch of the walls and roof. The smooth teak floors still bear the weight of countless footsteps, monks and devotees who walked these halls seeking solace and enlightenment.
