King Thalun’s ambition echoes in the grandeur of the Kaung Hmu Daw Ceti. He envisioned a monument to rival the revered Shwedagon Pagoda. Today, we stand before his magnificent creation. The Kaung Hmu Daw Ceti, also known as Yaza Mani Sula Kaunghmudaw, isn’t your typical Burmese pagoda. Forget the pointed spires. Imagine instead a massive, gleaming white dome, like a giant egg nestled on the landscape. Construction of Kaung Hmu Daw Ceti began in 1636 and took twelve years to complete, finishing in 1648. Its unique shape is said to be inspired by the Ruwanwelisaya pagoda of Sri Lanka. Another story whispers a more intriguing origin. Legend says the Queen, when asked for her input on the design, audaciously offered her own form as inspiration. Whatever the true inspiration, the Kaung Hmu Daw Ceti stands 46 meters tall and boasts a circumference of 274 meters. At its heart lies a massive, 7.3-meter-high seated Buddha statue, carved from a single piece of white marble. Imagine the skill and dedication required to create such a masterpiece. The lowest terrace, adorned with 120 nats and devas, is encircled by 802 stone lanterns. These lanterns bear inscriptions of Buddha’s life in Burmese, Mon, and Shan, a testament to the diversity of the Restored Toungoo Kingdom.
