Around 1908, a Thudhamma-affiliated monk named Agatithuka Sayadaw laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of Buddhist monastic life: the Mahagandaryon Monastery. Thousands of monks, clad in their distinctive red-brown robes, silently make their way to the dining hall. They carry alms baskets, a symbol of their reliance on the laity for sustenance. Even Ne Win, Myanmar’s leader during the 1970s, sought counsel from the Shwegyin monks residing within the monastery’s walls.
