Is there a deeper meaning to names? Lwan Zay Ti might sound like a whimsical name, but it holds a solemn history. Here, in the very heart of Mandalay, Lwan Zay Ti stands as a poignant memorial to the tragic end of Myanmar’s last monarchy. Constructed entirely of teakwood, Lwan Zay Ti was originally a royal apartment, a place of peace and contemplation for King Mindon. However, the king’s peaceful reign was not to last. Following his death, his son, King Thibaw, took the throne. King Thibaw was plagued by rumors and fears, whispering of his father’s ghost haunting the halls of the royal palace. He decided to relocate Lwan Zay Ti, moving it outside the palace walls to its current location near the Kuthodaw Pagoda in 1880. This move proved to be fateful. In a cruel twist of irony, while the grand palace was consumed by fire during World War II, the unassuming Lwan Zay Ti survived. It stands today as a testament to the impermanence of power and the enduring power of history.
