“Gateway District” or “Upper District”? The name Sheung Wan has two interpretations. This area of Hong Kong Island is located between Central and Sai Ying Pun. Sheung Wan is one of Hong Kong’s earliest settled areas. It retains the feel of old Hong Kong amid modern development.

The British first arrived in Hong Kong in Sheung Wan. In January 1841, the British navy disembarked here. They were under the command of Commodore James John Gordon Bremer. They raised the Union Jack flag. This ceremony symbolized the formal possession of Hong Kong. It happened at Possession Point.

Possession Street marks the spot today. Hollywood Road Park also commemorates the event. The bottom of Possession Street was once the waterfront. Reclamation has shifted it inland over the years.

Traditional shops still thrive in Sheung Wan. Dried seafood stores and wet markets are common. Des Voeux Road West has many dried foods. You can find dried duck, sea cucumber and abalone there. A variety of seaweeds are also available.

However Sheung Wan is also a center of the controversial shark’s fin trade. This trade harms shark populations. Queen’s Road West and Wing Lok Street feature traditional Chinese medicine shops. You can also find stores selling paper funeral offerings and incense.

Western Market is a historical monument. It is at 323 Des Voeux Road. The Edwardian-style brick building opened in 1906. It was a food market until 1988. Now, modern stores occupy the space.

Man Mo Temple is on Hollywood Road. It is a popular local temple. Sandalwood incense smoke fills the air. It is believed to be the oldest temple in Hong Kong.

Sheung Wan has a reputation for hipsters. Cool cafes, bars, and galleries serve them. You can find Japanese-style izakayas and modern art spaces.

Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park is a 10-minute walk from Sheung Wan Station. It has a statue of Sun Yat Sen. The park also offers sports facilities. These include a football pitch, jogging track and basketball courts.

Upper Lascar Row is also known as Cat Street. It is a pedestrianized lane. It specializes in antiques, replicas, jewelry, and curios. Stroll along it and search for a souvenir.

Sheung Wan offers a blend of old and new. It is a place where you can explore traditional culture and modern trends. From historic streets to bustling markets, Sheung Wan has much to offer. So take your time and discover the unique charm of Sheung Wan.
