Imagine yourself standing before the Middle Spur AOP. A relic of a bygone era this artillery observation post whispers tales of the fierce Battle of Hong Kong in 1941. It’s more than just a crumbling structure. It’s a silent witness to history.

The Middle Spur AOP played a crucial role during the battle. Perched high above Repulse Bay and Deep Water Bay it provided vital observation for British forces. Imagine the soldiers scanning the horizon. Their eyes searching for signs of the approaching Japanese invaders.

On December 19 1941 the Japanese launched their attack. The fighting was intense. The Middle Spur AOP became a strategic target. Accounts from Tony Banham’s book Not the slightest chance detail the intense fighting. The AOP was reported surrounded on December 20. The Royal Rifles launched attacks. The Japanese pushed south occupying areas around the Repulse Bay Hotel. Artillery fire rained down. Mortars exploded. Casualties mounted.

HMS Robin even fired on the Middle Spur AOP. Fifty rounds of 3.7-inch howitzer shells slammed into the area. The battle raged on. By December 22 the Japanese controlled the Repulse Bay Hotel and the surrounding areas. The fighting shifted towards Stanley. The Middle Spur AOP’s role was over.

Did the Royal Artillery soldiers escape before being surrounded? Was the trench dug by the Japanese or the British? The answers remain elusive. The concrete path connecting the AOP to a nearby shelter adds intrigue. Was it built during wartime? Even the service reservoir near the trench raises questions. Was it there before the war? These questions add layers to the mystery of the Middle Spur AOP.

Today the Middle Spur AOP stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought. It’s a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in Hong Kong’s history. A place where you can feel the weight of the past the echoes of gunfire the whispers of forgotten battles.
