The air is thick with the scent of jungle foliage and the heat of the sun. You’ve traveled to a small village in Cu Chi District, nestled on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City. The Cu Chi Tunnels, a vast network dug by hand, have been waiting to tell you their story. They are a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the people of Vietnam. They were used during the Vietnam War by the Viet Cong – guerrilla soldiers – as a way to move supplies around and to fight a war unlike any other.

The tunnels are a labyrinth of narrow passages, some only a meter high. It’s easy to imagine the Viet Cong soldiers squeezing through them, carrying their weapons and supplies. They were more than just hiding places. They were kitchens, hospitals, meeting halls, and homes for hundreds of people. Life below the surface was dangerous. Air, food, and water were scarce. The tunnels were full of ants, centipedes, snakes, scorpions, spiders, and rodents.

The Cu Chi Tunnels are a reminder of the ingenuity of the Viet Cong fighters. They had to be clever and cunning. They used traps to hurt and kill soldiers who tried to go deep into the system. And to get rid of smoke and poisonous gas, ventilation shafts were built. The tunnels were so well protected that the U.S. military struggled to destroy them.

You can walk through the tunnels, but you’ll know that the real challenge faced by the soldiers would have been extreme. In some areas, the tunnels have been widened to accommodate visitors. You can climb down into the darkness and see what it was like for the Viet Cong soldiers.

The Cu Chi Tunnels are a powerful reminder of the sacrifices that were made during the war. They are also a symbol of the Vietnamese people’s determination to protect their land. You’ll leave Cu Chi with a sense of awe for the people who lived and fought in these underground spaces.
