A melody drifted from the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, beckoning us closer. This wasn’t just any building. It was a crucible where musical dreams were forged. The Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, established on April 12, 1956, stands as a testament to Vietnam’s enduring passion for music. It started as the Music Division of Gia Dinh Art College. In 1956, it branched out to become the National Conservatory of Music. Later, a dramatics faculty was added, leading to a name change: the National Music and Dramatics School. The school focused on European music, Vietnamese national music, and Vietnamese traditional dramatics. The Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music wasn’t always known by this name. After 1975, it became the Ho Chi Minh City National Music School. The dramatics division spun off to form the Ho Chi Minh City Dramatics School, now known as the Ho Chi Minh City Cinematics and Dramatics College. In 1978, dancing joined the curriculum. By 1980, the institution achieved university status and its current name. The Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music offers a range of programs. These include long-term and short-term intermediate degrees, bachelor’s and master’s programs, and even doctorates. The Conservatory isn’t just about performing. It’s a place of study, with faculties dedicated to theory, composition, conducting, various instruments (piano, symphony, traditional Vietnamese, guitar, mandolin, accordion), and vocal training. Over 100 lecturers, many renowned musicians and composers themselves, guide the students. The Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music isn’t just a school. It’s a vibrant hub of musical activity. Several orchestras, including a symphony orchestra, an adult orchestra, a children’s orchestra, a Vietnamese traditional orchestra, and a Guitar, Mandoline, Accordion (GMAC) orchestra, call it home. Two concert rooms host bi-weekly performances. Graduates often become famous singers and composers, contributing to Vietnam’s musical landscape. The Conservatory boasts numerous awards, including recognition at the J.B.Bach International Concours in Leipzig, Germany, and several Labor Medals. The Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music isn’t just a building. It is a living legacy, a vibrant testament to Vietnam’s musical heritage.
