Hidden within Cologne’s history lies the captivating story of the Cellitinnen zur Hl. Maria. Their origins trace back to the late 13th century to Cologne’s first Beguines. These women dedicated their lives to prayer and community. They cared for the sick weak and poor. They also comforted the dying and the bereaved.

The Cellitinnen zur Hl. Maria as we know them today emerged in 1828. Twelve sisters from two monasteries found a new home in a former Carmelite convent. This convent was near the parish church of St Maria in Cologne’s Kupfergasse. They established themselves as a community named after their location. Their numbers grew significantly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By 1930 they had 52 houses primarily in the Rhineland. Around 600 sisters cared for the sick and elderly. They ran kindergartens orphanages and offered cooking household and sewing classes.

Their original motherhouse in Kupfergasse was completely destroyed during World War II. The sisters temporarily relocated to Hürth-Fischenich. In the summer of 1959 they moved to their current motherhouse in Cologne’s Longerich district. Since the 1960s their numbers have declined sharply. The community has aged and lacks new recruits. Despite this challenge the Cellitinnen zur Hl. Maria preserved their work and goals. In 1990 they transferred their tasks to secular employees. In 2002 they founded the Stiftung der Cellitinnen zur hl. Maria. This foundation continues their social and charitable work. Today this foundation includes eight hospitals two rehabilitation clinics nineteen senior care homes and other healthcare facilities. These institutions provide services in the Cologne Bonn Aachen and Wuppertal region. The Cellitinnen zur Hl. Maria’s legacy continues to shape the lives of countless individuals in the area. Their profound commitment to service and compassion resonates powerfully in the community. This enduring spirit embodies the remarkable journey of the Cellitinnen zur Hl. Maria. Their story is one of dedication adaptation and unwavering service. This is a true testament to their enduring spirit and devotion.
