In 1907, atop Mount Kellett, Matilda International Hospital opened its doors. This wasn’t just any hospital. It was a testament to a love story, a beacon of hope born from tragedy and generosity. Matilda International Hospital stands as a tribute to Matilda Lincolne Sharp, a woman whose compassion touched countless lives in Hong Kong. Her husband, Granville Sharp, a successful banker, immortalized her memory with this hospital. His will stipulated it be built “not for the glory of the medical profession… but for the benefit, care and happiness of the patient.” Matilda International Hospital initially served expatriates, reflecting the social dynamics of the time. Non-British residents were restricted from The Peak, limiting the hospital’s reach. Over the years, Matilda International Hospital evolved, mirroring Hong Kong’s transformation. It weathered financial storms, typhoons, war, and even plague, emerging stronger each time. It became a symbol of resilience, echoing the spirit of its namesake. The Matilda International Hospital evolved from its initial role as a free provider for expatriates into a modern, not-for-profit institution serving all of Hong Kong and the wider region. Today, Matilda International Hospital provides core services, including maternity, orthopedics and spine, surgical, health assessment, and outpatient services. The Matilda Medical Centre, opened in Central in 2007, further expanded its reach. In 2017, the Matilda Orthopaedic and Spine Centre joined the network, solidifying the hospital’s commitment to specialized care. Matilda International Hospital also embraces a philosophy of clinical governance, prioritizing patient care quality. It holds accreditation from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS), a testament to its high standards. It even received an “Outstanding Achievement” award from ACHS, further highlighting its dedication to excellence. The legacy of compassion established by Matilda Lincolne Sharp continues to permeate the hospital’s mission. It stands as a tribute to a remarkable woman and a testament to the enduring power of generosity.
