What’s in a name? Hloubětín, a district of Prague, has seen its name evolve over time. It started as Lupatin, then Glupetin, Hlupetin, Hloupětín, and finally settled as Hloubětín in 1907. This evolution reflects the ever-changing history of this fascinating place. Hloubětín’s story begins in the 13th century with the presence of the Teutonic Knights. Their influence marked the area’s first significant historical record. Centuries passed, and in 1922, Hloubětín became part of Prague. Today, when you visit Hloubětín, you’ll find a primarily industrial landscape, a testament to Prague’s industrial semi-circle. This area was once the home of the Tesla company during the communist era. The name Hloubětín, interestingly, is derived from the surname Hlápata. This personal touch adds another layer of intrigue to Hloubětín’s industrial character. Hloubětín is situated by the Rokytka River. Its northern edge stretches towards Kbely Airport, while to the west lies Hořejší rybník, a serene protected area centered around a lake. Hloubětín also boasts excellent transport links. It’s conveniently close to the D11 and R10 roads, and the Praha-Kyje railway station provides a direct connection to Pardubice. The Prague Metro’s Line B also stops at Hloubětín station, making it easily accessible. And for those who prefer trams, Hloubětín is a major hub on Prague’s extensive tram network.
