Tucked away in the Frontier Closed Area, discover the Shan Tsui Hip Tin Temple. This isn’t just any temple. It’s a time capsule whispering tales of Sha Tau Kok’s vibrant past. The Shan Tsui Hip Tin Temple, rebuilt between 1894 and 1895, replaced an older temple dedicated to Kwan Tai, the God of Martial Arts. He was given the title “Hip Tin” during the Ming dynasty. This temple holds a special place in the history of Sha Tau Kok, playing a key role in the area’s economic rise in the late 19th century.

The Shan Tsui Hip Tin Temple stands as a testament to the Tung Wo Market, a bustling hub operated by the “Shap Yeuk” village alliance. This alliance shaped Sha Tau Kok’s economy from the 1830s to the 1930s. The story of the temple’s reconstruction is etched onto five stone plaques within its front hall. These plaques not only detail the rebuilding process but also reveal the intricate connections between the Sha Tau Kok community and overseas Chinese. The temple’s architecture is a feast for the eyes. The altar and fascia boards are intricately carved. The trefoil doorways of the front and rear halls add a touch of elegance. The brick facade, granite door frame, and plaster dragonfish corbels are all remarkably preserved.

The Shan Tsui Hip Tin Temple served as more than just a place of worship. It acted as a community center and even a school. In the early 20th century, it housed the Fuk Tak Study Hall. This role was revived in 1959 when the newly established Shan Tsui Public School used the temple for its office and classrooms. The school eventually moved to a new campus in 2015. It was renamed Fuk Tak Education Society Primary School, honoring its historical connection to the temple. The villagers of Shan Tsui still celebrate the Kwan Tai Festival every year on the thirteenth day of the fifth lunar month. This tradition keeps the spirit of Kwan Tai alive within the community. In 2021, the Shan Tsui Hip Tin Temple received well-deserved recognition. It was declared a monument, solidifying its place in Hong Kong’s rich history.
