“My experience is that abstract art can arise in two ways” a voice echoes. It’s Lajos Barta’s words. His words linger around the Uralte Form sculpture. We stand before it now.

The Uralte Form is a powerful bronze sculpture. It’s a three-meter tall masterpiece. It’s more than just a sculpture. It’s a testament to resilience and artistic vision.

Lajos Barta a Hungarian artist created it. He was born in Budapest in 1899. He fled Hungary because of antisemitic laws. He found refuge in Paris. He later returned to Budapest. He narrowly escaped deportation during the Holocaust.

Barta’s journey is reflected in the Uralte Form. The sculpture’s organic form suggests growth. It evokes both natural processes and ancient artifacts. It shows the artist’s skill and his inner strength.

The original was a small plaster model. It was just 60 centimeters high. Barta later created this larger bronze version. Eighty-five Cologne citizens donated it in 1985. The inscription on its base proves this. It reads: Lajos Barta Born 1899 Uralte Form Cast Janssen & Vloet Donated 1985 by 85 Cologne Citizens.

The Uralte Form stands in the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Park. This park commemorates the atomic bombings. The sculpture’s presence is thought-provoking. It offers a different kind of remembrance.

It’s situated near the Aachener Weiher. It rises from a hill. The hill is made of war debris. The contrast between the past and the present is striking.

Barta moved to Cologne in 1967. He died here in 1986. He is buried in Melaten Cemetery. The Uralte Form is his lasting legacy. It’s a symbol of his life’s work. It’s a sculpture that speaks of survival creation and hope.
