Gazing at Hodkovičky, one might initially see just another charming Prague suburb. But beneath the surface lies a rich tapestry of history. Hodkovičky whispers tales of ancient landowners and bustling markets. It’s a place where the echoes of the past intertwine with the vibrant energy of the present. Hodkovičky first appeared in historical records in 1245 as property of the Vyšehrad Chapter. Imagine the scene, monks meticulously tending their lands, the Vltava River flowing serenely nearby. Later, in 1368, the nearby village of Lhotka shared the same esteemed owner. As centuries passed, a new settlement, Nové Dvory, emerged in the 19th century, adding another layer to Hodkovičky’s evolving story. In 1900, Hodkovičky, then known as “Malé Hodkovice” (Little Hodkovice) to distinguish it from another village of the same name, was a picturesque village of 346 inhabitants. Think of charming villas nestled amidst flourishing vegetable gardens, a peaceful haven within the bustling district of Královské Vinohrady. A significant turning point arrived in 1922 when Hodkovičky became part of Prague, specifically Prague XV. As part of this integration, a section of Modřany, called Zátiší, joined Hodkovičky, bringing the total population to nearly 1200, residing in 127 houses. The administrative landscape continued to shift. In 1949, Hodkovičky became part of Prague 15, alongside Braník, Podolí, and part of Krč. Then, in 1960, it joined the newly formed Prague 4 district, where it remains today as an integral part of the vibrant Prague 4 borough. Hodkovičky is bordered by several distinct neighborhoods. To the north lies Braník, to the east Lhotka, to the south Kamýk and Modřany, and across the Vltava River to the west is Malá Chuchle. Each neighbor adds its own unique flavor to the mix, creating a diverse and dynamic community surrounding Hodkovičky. Today, Hodkovičky stands as a testament to its resilient past, a community of over 3,000 residents woven into the fabric of Prague.
