Atop this Baroque marvel we stand. The St Nicholas Bell Tower. Its copper dome gleams. It’s a stunning sight.
This isn’t just any bell tower. Oh no. This is a piece of Prague’s vibrant history. Built in 1755 it’s a Dientzenhofer family masterpiece. This family were important builders in Prague. They built this tower. The tower stands beside the Church of St Nicholas in Lesser Town Square.
More than a pretty face the St Nicholas Bell Tower has a secret past. It was a fire watchtower. Imagine a watchman frantically waving a red flag. He’d signal the direction of a fire. This was his job until 1891. The last signalman left then.
But the tower’s story doesn’t end there. During the Communist era the tower became a secret police observation post. Codenamed Kajka agents monitored embassies. They watched movements of diplomatic vehicles. The US UK and German embassies were under surveillance. So were Japanese and Yugoslavian ones. Think of the secrets this tower held.
Climb the 303 steps. You’ll pass preserved offices. You’ll see the watchmen’s flats. A unique black kitchen is there too. It’s a glimpse into the past. You’ll see the baroque drainage system too. And you’ll hear the bell of St Nicholas. This bell was cast in 1576. It’s the only one left. Others were lost during the World Wars.
Reach the observation deck. You’re 65 meters above Prague. The view is breathtaking. A 360-degree panorama unfolds. Charles Bridge stretches below. Lesser Town rooftops spread out. Prague Castle stands majestically in the distance. It’s a view Jaroslav Seifert immortalized in his poetry.
The St Nicholas Bell Tower. More than just a climb. It’s a journey through time. A testament to Prague’s rich and complex history. It’s a story waiting to be discovered.
