Tucked away in the Tai Wai area of Sha Tin District lies Kak Tin Village. Kak Tin Village whispers stories of resilience and transformation, a testament to the enduring spirit of its inhabitants. Let’s step into the heart of Kak Tin Village and uncover its hidden narratives. Kak Tin Village emerged around 400 years ago, founded by the Tsang clan who journeyed from Shandong. Their ancestor, Tsang Nam-hin, sought a new beginning, eventually settling in Kak Tin during the late Ming dynasty. Imagine the early days of Kak Tin Village. The Tsang families cultivated rice and vegetable patches, their livelihoods interwoven with the land. Pigs and poultry added to their sustenance, creating a self-sufficient community. By 1899, the village embraced 130 souls, growing to 200 in 1911 and 220 by 1960. Kak Tin Village has witnessed dramatic changes. The traditional village houses, once the heart of the community, have largely given way to modern small houses. Yet, the spirit of Kak Tin Village persists. Around 80 Tsang families still call this village home. They carry the legacy of their ancestors. Even amidst modernization, echoes of the past linger. Two houses, numbers 11 and 12 on Kak Tin Village Third Street, stood as Grade III historic buildings. Built in the 1920s and 1930s, they bore witness to generations of village life. Sadly, these tangible links to the past were demolished in May 2020. Their stories, however, remain etched in the collective memory of Kak Tin Village. The story of Kak Tin Village is one of adaptation and continuity. It’s a small village with a big history. It reminds us that even in the face of change, the spirit of a community can endure.
