The Sai Wan Tin Hau Temple is dedicated to Tin Hau. She is the Goddess of the Sea. People built it some time before 1929. It is now a Grade III historic building.

Tin Hau’s story began around the year 960. She was born on the island of Meizhoudao. There, she is known as Mazu. Her birth name was Mòniáng meaning Silent Girl.

One day a typhoon hit. Mòniáng fell into a trance. Her spirit went out to sea. She brought her family members back to safety, one by one. Lín’s mother woke her, causing her to drop her fourth brother in the sea. The next day, her father and three brothers returned. All of the other men were lost. She then ascended to heaven at the age of 27.

People worshiped her as a spirit and patron of seafarers. Soon temples to Grandmother began appearing all over the region.

The Sai Wan Tin Hau Temple is more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies the spirit of those who depend on the sea. Imagine the fishermen. They pray for safe passage and bountiful catches.

The temple is a testament to the enduring power of faith. It shows the deep connection between the people of Cheung Chau and the sea. It is a Grade III historic building that has stood for generations. It has watched over the island and its inhabitants.

Many temples are dedicated to Tin Hau in Hong Kong. There are over 80 temples. Even an MTR station is named after her. Her birthday sees energetic parades with lion and dragon dances.

Tin Hau is nearly always seated on a throne wearing an empress’ crown. She has two demonic attendants. They are called Shun Fung Yi and Chin Lei Ngan. Tin Hau unites different Chinese communities. Her birthday is the biggest festival for an individual deity in the local calendar.

The goddess came to Hong Kong during the Song dynasty. Seafaring folk brought her with them. They settled the territory and set up shrines in harbors and bays.
