Is it possible for a place to hold both immense beauty and terrible darkness? We’re standing before Saint Bartholomew’s Church, a stunning example of Baroque architecture. But the street it stands on, Bartolomějská, whispers a different tale. Since the 1950s, this street was home to the StB, the secret Czech police. Imagine the fear that gripped Prague as the StB operated from this very spot, their presence a stark contrast to the church’s sanctity. While Saint Bartholomew’s offered solace and faith, the StB sowed suspicion and terror. Thousands of Czechs were spied on, tortured, and even killed under their regime. The contrast is a chilling reminder of the duality of humanity, where beauty and brutality can exist side-by-side. The Velvet Revolution of 1989 finally brought an end to the StB’s reign. Today, Bartolomějská stands as a testament to the resilience of the Czech spirit and a reminder that even in darkness, hope can persevere.
