The soaring spire of St Andrew’s Church pierces the Cape Town sky. It’s a sight that has witnessed centuries of history.

St Andrew’s Church in Newlands is more than just a pretty building. It’s a living testament to faith and community. Its foundations were laid long ago. Its story begins far earlier than its 1894 completion date.

Originally a small chapel built in 1856 it served as a school chapel. Later it was even repurposed as a house. This humble beginning contrasts sharply with its eventual grandeur. The present church a stunning example of architecture. It was designed by the renowned Sir Herbert Baker. This is the same architect responsible for many other significant buildings in South Africa. The church’s cornerstone was laid by Lady Loch in 1894. She was the wife of the Cape’s governor. Bishop West Jones consecrated the building on St Andrew’s Day that same year.

The building materials are locally sourced Table Mountain stone. The dressed stone walls stand strong. Eight buttresses reinforce the north side. Six others support the south. Two are placed on each of the east and west walls. The roof has undergone several transformations. Initially thatched. Later it became wooden shingles. Eventually it was replaced by mazista slate. The church bell a gift from 1895 now sits proudly in a turret. It was added to the structure in 1897.

But St Andrew’s boasts more than just architectural beauty. The three stunning stained-glass windows on the east wall are truly remarkable. Created by the masterful Edward Burne Jones these are unique. They are the only examples of his work in South Africa. A gift from Lady Loch herself these windows were dedicated in 1912. A testament to her family’s connection to the church. Lady Loch was Gladstone’s daughter. She and her husband lived at nearby Newlands House.

St Andrew’s Church is more than stone and glass. It’s a place of worship and community. A place that has seen generations gather. It is a place of comfort and hope. It is a constant throughout years of change. This impressive building continues to stand. A beacon of faith in the heart of Cape Town.
