Established in 1896 Sea Point Methodist Church stands proudly on Main Road. A group of Wesleyans from Sea Point and Green Point wanted their own space. They were tired of using rented halls. Their dream became a reality. The first minister Reverend Hodges arrived in 1897. The church building was dedicated the following year.

Sea Point Methodist Church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to resilience and community spirit. Its history is intertwined with the struggles of apartheid South Africa. Reverend Theo Kotze served as chaplain at Robben Island. He ministered to both Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe. Reverend Kotze’s outspokenness led to his banning and exile in 1977.

During the 1970s the forced removals of District Six happened. Another minister Reverend Tom Parker bravely invited banned black members of Chapel Street Church to use the Sea Point Methodist Church building. This was a courageous act. It defied the ‘whites only’ laws of the time. Members of that congregation still attend services today. The church now proudly embraces its diverse congregation.

Sea Point Methodist Church is a small church with a big heart. People from all walks of life worship there. They are united by their faith and their commitment to serving their community.
