Envision a vibrant tapestry of green. This is Ting Kok SSSI. It’s more than just a pretty view. Ting Kok SSSI is a place of vital ecological importance. The Ting Kok Coastal Conservation Plan began in 2012. It recognizes the rich marine resources here. It also acknowledges the scenic value of Shuen Wan Hoi and Tolo Harbour.

The plan has three main goals. First, it enhances ecological conservation at Ting Kok SSSI and Ting Kok East. Second, it raises public awareness about the value of coastal ecology. Third, it reviews the educational value of the area. It considers how the public, students, and researchers can appropriately use it.

Ting Kok mangrove is the fourth largest in Hong Kong. There are 44 mangrove stands here. Ting Kok covers 8.77 hectares. It became a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1985. This mangrove grows on hard ground. Most mangroves in Hong Kong grow on soft ground.

Ting Kok SSSI supports a wide variety of plants and animals. Six of eight true mangrove species live here. These include Milky Mangrove and Black Mangrove. You can also find Kandelia obovata here. Coastal plants like Screw Pine thrive too.

Mangrove ecosystems are critical in Hong Kong. Fallen leaves create detritus. This provides food for many creatures. The productive mangrove offers shelter. It is a breeding ground for marine life. Juvenile fish and crabs find refuge here. Shrimps and mollusks also live here. You might spot Little Egrets foraging. Common Sandpipers search for food here too.

OWLHK organized Ting Kok Appreciation Day in 2019. This was organized by Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. The event took place at Tai Po Waterfront Park. There were game booths and ecological painting. A photo exhibition displayed winning entries from Light of Tolo 2019. The event aimed to increase public awareness of coastal habitats. It also raised the importance of conservation.

Some people want even greater protection for Ting Kok. A petition asks the government to legislate Ting Kok as a Marine Reserve. This would better protect its biodiversity. It would also enhance the educational value. Currently part of Ting Kok is zoned for a spa resort hotel. Construction noise and waste dumping threaten the area. Preserving the whole area undisturbed is key to protecting its ecological values. Ting Kok SSSI deserves our attention. It deserves our protection.
