Can you hear the whispers of emperors past? Lantau, also known as Lantau Island, holds echoes of ancient dynasties. Lantau Island sits west of Hong Kong Island. It’s the largest island in Hong Kong. It’s part of the New Territories. Lantau was once a simple island, dotted with fishing villages. Today, it’s home to Hong Kong International Airport. You’ll also find Hong Kong Disneyland there. Ngong Ping 360, a cable car system, also calls Lantau home. Lantau has a rich history. In 1276, the Southern Song dynasty court fled to Lantau. They were escaping Mongol invaders. They sought refuge in Silvermine Bay, now known as Mui Wo. Two young princes, brothers of Emperor Gong of Song, led the resistance. The older prince, Zhao Shi, was declared Emperor Duanzong. Sadly, he died on Lantau. His younger brother, Zhao Bing, then became emperor. He, too, met his end, marking the dynasty’s downfall. This was a pivotal moment in Lantau’s history. Lantau’s name is derived from Lantau Peak. The peak’s old local name was 牛頭 (Ngau Tau), which translates to “Rotten Head.” Lantau Island has a diverse landscape. Lantau Peak, its highest point, reaches 934 meters. It’s the second highest peak in Hong Kong, after Tai Mo Shan. Lantau is known as “the lungs of Hong Kong.” Its vast country parks and indigenous forests contribute to this nickname. These parks cover over half of Lantau. Lantau has been a site of both peace and conflict. The Trappist Haven Monastery provides a peaceful retreat. It’s home to Roman Catholic monks. In contrast, Lantau also houses six prisons. These include the maximum-security Shek Pik Prison. Lantau has played an important role in various historical events. It was a haven for pirates and smugglers in the 19th century. It was a site of resistance against the Japanese during World War II. It was a key location for the Fiber-Optic Link Around the Globe project in 2000. Lantau Island is much more than just an island. It is a place where history, nature, and modern development intertwine. It offers a unique experience for every visitor, from the tranquility of its monasteries to the thrill of its theme park. Lantau whispers stories of emperors, pirates, and monks. Will you listen?
