Climb with me to Yuen Chau Teng. What was once an island is now connected by land. Yuen Chau Teng sits in the Sha Tin District. It is near Sha Tin Road. Also it is close to Prince of Wales Hospital. You can walk here from City One station. This station is on the MTR Tuen Ma line.
Before the 1970s Yuen Chau Teng was an island. This was before reclamation work. The island was in Tide Cove. Yuen Chau Teng was important for travelers. Goods moved between Guangdong and Kowloon. Wong Uk Village was a trading station. Merchants and travelers used it. This lasted until the late 19th century.
Most old village buildings are gone. They were ruined when Tide Cove was reclaimed. This reclamation was for Sha Tin New Town. Now the main part of the island is a park. Even a branch of Tse village moved here. They came from Sha Tin Wai. They built their own village. That is the story of Yuen Chau Teng. It changed from island to park. It was a hub for trade. Now it is part of Sha Tin.
