Hidden within Prague’s vibrant tapestry of architectural styles, Palác Letná stands as a testament to the city’s embrace of functionalism. Right here on Milady Horákové street, this sleek, seven-story structure captures the spirit of 1930s modernism. Palác Letná isn’t just a building. It’s a time capsule, offering a glimpse into a pivotal era in Prague’s history. Designed by architect Eugen Rosenberg, Palác Letná was originally commissioned as a modern apartment building with commercial spaces. Its construction, between 1936 and 1937, coincided with a period of significant growth and architectural innovation in the city. As you gaze upon its facade, notice the horizontal bands of windows that wrap around the building. These windows, a hallmark of functionalist design, flood the interior with natural light. At the top, a spacious terrace follows the building’s clean lines, providing residents with stunning views of the city. Palác Letná’s ground floor, with its subtle awning, once housed a shop and Erhart’s confectionery, a popular café. The first and second floors were also dedicated to commercial ventures. Interestingly, a library also graced the first floor for many years, though it has since relocated. Look closely at the entrance. A metal plaque commemorates the building’s creation, mentioning Bohuslav J. Hanák, the investor, and the Českomoravská stavební a.s., the construction company responsible for bringing Rosenberg’s vision to life. Step inside and imagine yourself transported back to the 1930s. The confectionery, designed by Rosenberg himself, has been meticulously preserved. Its original features, including the display cases, counter, and terrazzo flooring, have been carefully restored and complemented with period-style replicas. This café stands as a rare example of a fully preserved functionalist interior in the Czech Republic. Palác Letná isn’t simply a building; it’s a living testament to Prague’s rich architectural heritage. Its story, interwoven with the threads of functionalism and the city’s vibrant past, continues to unfold within these very walls.
