Upon Kei Lun Shan’s peak a cool wind whispers secrets. This isn’t just any hill. Kei Lun Shan holds a fascinating history. It overlooks the border between Hong Kong and mainland China. Its strategic location played a key role in the region’s past. For decades Kei Lun Shan served as a silent witness to significant events.

Imagine the British Army in the 1950s. They built fortifications on Kei Lun Shan. These weren’t grand castles. They were trenches and small buildings. These structures were built to deter potential threats from Communist China. Soldiers dug trenches into the rock. The work must have been incredibly arduous. The soil on Kei Lun Shan is thin and rocky. Some trenches even received cement finishes. A small brick and concrete building stands as a testament to their efforts. It was a well-built structure. Much more so than the Japanese pillboxes found in other areas.

One intriguing detail stands out. A Lieutenant Allen T Green died here. This happened during a 1950 military exercise. A Sea Fury aircraft from the Royal Navy accidentally hit Haddon Hill during the exercise. Haddon Hill is another name for Kei Lun Shan. The small brick building might have been an ammo shed or something similar. Its exact purpose remains a mystery to this day.

The trenches were primarily built by the First Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. They arrived in Hong Kong in the autumn of 1951. They were part of the effort to protect the New Territories. Barbed wire entanglements were erected as well. The structures on Kei Lun Shan reflect the tensions and anxieties of the Cold War era. They stand as physical reminders of a time when the border was a place of uncertainty.

Today Kei Lun Shan offers stunning views. It is a tranquil place for hiking and reflection. But within its tranquil setting lie layers of history. This hill has absorbed the echoes of war preparations. It has also witnessed the quiet determination of soldiers protecting their post. As you leave Kei Lun Shan you’ll carry with you more than just beautiful memories. You will also carry a deeper understanding of this hill’s significant place in history.
