What did people do in Prague before there were parks? Well imagine a time when vast forests and hunting grounds ruled the landscape. That’s how the area we know as Stromovka used to be. It was actually a royal hunting ground. In this landscape emerged the Zelený rybníky, not just one pond, but a system of interconnected ponds. Zelený rybník specifically, with its surface area of over 5,000 square meters, is a testament to that grand vision. This entire system was a crucial part of Prague’s water management system. It’s hard to believe now as we enjoy the peace of Zelený rybník, but this tranquil pond has seen its share of drama. In 1881, a massive renovation project began, forever changing the face of Zelený rybník and its companions. The banks were reinforced, and the surrounding landscape was transformed into the park we know and love today. But nature, as always, had its own plans. In 2013, devastating floods ravaged Prague, leaving Zelený rybník severely damaged. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, Zelený rybník was restored to its former glory. Today, it stands as a symbol of resilience, a picturesque oasis in the heart of Prague.
