Could a farm whisper secrets of centuries past? At Toulcův Dvůr, it certainly seems so. Toulcův Dvůr isn’t just a charming farm. It’s a living testament to Prague’s rich history, nestled in the heart of Hostivař. The first whispers of this court date back to 1362. It was part of a larger estate, then under the watchful eye of the Sázava Monastery. Imagine the monks tending the land, the rhythmic clang of their tools echoing through the valley. Toulcův Dvůr also served as the local Rychta, a sort of town hall. It was the center of daily life, where disputes were settled and news was shared. Later, a fortified manor house arose within the courtyard. This added another layer of stories, whispers of noble families and their intrigues. The estate changed hands over the centuries. The highest burgrave, the powerful Rožmberk family, even held sway here. Their rose emblem still graces the Hostivař coat of arms, a reminder of their presence. Fast forward to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the sweet scent of sugar filled the air. The Modřany sugar refinery established a branch here, transforming Toulcův Dvůr into a hub of industry. After the First World War, the estate was nationalized, and a new chapter began. Enter František Toulec, the last tenant farmer. A wise and kind man, František became synonymous with the farm. His legacy lives on in its name. Under communist rule, Toulcův Dvůr fell under the management of the State Farm, focusing on industrial production. However, its destiny shifted in 1992. The new government designated Toulcův Dvůr for non-profit ecological and educational activities. The City of Prague became its custodian. Today, Toulcův Dvůr thrives as an Environmental Education Center. It stands as a testament to the vision of its founder, Emilie Strejčková. Her dedication breathed new life into the historical buildings. The eight-hectare site includes wetlands, meadows, and a forest. It’s a haven for traditional Czech breeds of farm animals. The farm is also home to a kindergarten, a library, and an organic food shop. Toulcův Dvůr whispers stories of change, resilience, and the enduring power of nature. It’s a reminder that even in a bustling city, history can take root, flourish, and whisper secrets to those who listen.
