Seen from here, the Hradčanská radnice looks almost modest. This Renaissance building stands in Prague’s Hradčany district. It is a testament to a time when Hradčany was an independent city.

The Hradčanská radnice may be the smallest of Prague’s historical town halls. But it has its own unique story to tell. In 1598 Emperor Rudolf II declared Hradčany an independent city. This decision spurred the need for its own town hall. Thus, the Hradčanská radnice was built between 1608 and 1611.

Look closely at the facade of the Hradčanská radnice. You will spot the city’s emblem. You can also see the imperial insignia. The symbol of Justice completes the display. These symbols reflect Hradčany’s status and governance.

The Hradčanská radnice underwent changes in the early 18th century. It was converted into a residential building. Despite this conversion, the building retains its Renaissance charm. It stands as a remarkable historical monument near Prague Castle.

Notice the sgraffito work. The facade features sgraffito rustication. Above the entrance portal, you can see the city’s emblem. The imperial and Hradčany signs are also incorporated into the sgraffito.

The building is a four-wing Renaissance structure. It dates back to the turn of the 17th century. The street line of Loretánská Street and the Hradčany walls defined its depth. The Hradčany walls originated in the 14th century.

The western wing used to be the main town hall building. It features a two-story volute gable on a low attic. The northern wing is one-story and saddle-roofed. Its main facade faces west.

Inside, the Hradčanská radnice reveals more of its past. The western wing has a vaulted arcade. It opens into the courtyard with three arches. The ground floor rooms have barrel vaults. The first floor has flat ceilings. The original layout is still visible. The cellar is vaulted. The ground floor is cross- or barrel-vaulted.

The Hradčanská radnice is the youngest and most humble of Prague’s town halls. This reflects Hradčany’s subservient position. It was effectively subordinate to Prague Castle. The Hradčanská radnice contrasts sharply with the Old Town and New Town halls. Those town halls were built in the 14th century. The Lesser Town Hall is also grander.

In 1784, the significance of the Hradčanská radnice diminished. The four historical towns merged into Prague. The united city was under a single magistrate. The magistrate resided in the Old Town Hall.

The Hradčanská radnice may no longer function as a seat of government. But its historical and architectural value endures. It remains an important part of Prague’s rich heritage. Today, the Hradčanská radnice stands as a reminder of Hradčany’s independent past. It is a modest yet significant landmark in Prague. Its story is etched into its walls.
