Sai Tam Teng. A peak reaching for the sky. It’s not just a geographical point. It’s a silent witness to the ebb and flow of life on Yim Tin Tsai, the “Little Salt Pan” island nestled a short boat ride from Sai Kung. Sai Tam Teng looks out over a village steeped in almost 300 years of Hakka history. A history intertwined with the unique blend of local traditions and European Catholicism. Imagine standing here in 1875, with the Chan clan, the island’s sole inhabitants, making their way to St. Joseph’s Chapel. This chapel, a proud sentinel overlooking the village and bay, isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the island’s faith. Its remarkable preservation earned it a UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Award of Merit in 2005. It was also designated a Grade II Historic Building in Hong Kong in 2011. Sai Tam Teng has witnessed the comings and goings of the faithful. Generations of villagers have sought solace within the chapel’s walls. Even today, descendants of the Chan clan, scattered across the globe, return to Yim Tin Tsai. They gather at St. Joseph’s for the annual mass. Sai Tam Teng has also observed the island’s industry. For nearly 200 years, salt production was the lifeblood of Yim Tin Tsai. The island, barely 500 meters in diameter, became a hub of activity as the Hakka people worked the salt pans. The traditional salt-making process, a slow dance between seawater, sun, and wind, continues to this day. The salt pans themselves earned UNESCO recognition in 2015 for preserving this vital piece of Hong Kong’s industrial heritage. From this vantage point on Sai Tam Teng, you can appreciate the island’s vibrant ecosystem. Crisscrossing trails wind through flourishing mangroves and camphor trees. Sai Tam Teng offers a breathtaking panorama. It encompasses not just the island’s rich past, but also its revitalized present. The Yim Tin Tsai Heritage Exhibition Centre showcases Hakka culture. The island also hosted the Yim Tin Tsai Arts Festival from 2019 to 2021. Sai Tam Teng stands as a timeless observer of Yim Tin Tsai’s transformation. It reminds us that even a small island, a “Little Salt Pan,” can hold a vast and captivating story.
