“Did you hear about the time St Luke’s Church almost became a schoolhouse?” That’s not quite how the story goes, but it hints at the deep roots this church has in the Diep River community. St Luke’s Church stands here as a testament to faith and resilience. It has weathered storms of social upheaval.

Let’s step back to 1897. Diep River was then a tranquil farming area. Green fields surrounded the river. Sheep and cattle grazed peacefully. St John’s Parish recognized the needs of this community. They established a small mission church in 1893.

A young Herbert Baker drew up the plans for a church and school. He later designed several other churches and the Union Buildings in Pretoria. St Luke the Beloved Physician celebrated its first St Luke’s Day in October 1897.

St Luke’s flourished. It became a vibrant community hub. There was a choir, Sunday School, Women’s Guild and a Men’s Society. The Church Lads and Girls Brigade were active. Concerts and annual bazaars became legendary. The school offered primary education. It maintained an excellent academic record.

The late 1960s brought devastation. Diep River was declared a white residential area. The Group Areas Act forced most of St Luke’s members to relocate. They were sent to areas designated for “non-white” people. The school closed. Community activities ceased. Much of what they treasured lay in ruins. Some elderly members lost the will to live. They simply gave up and passed away.

But the congregation of St Luke’s Church was resilient. People commuted from far-flung areas. They re-established their community. A non-racial playgroup opened in 1982. It was in the old Primary School buildings. This defied Apartheid regulations. Despite threats from authorities, the school stood firm. It continues today as St Luke’s Educare.

The repeal of the Group Areas Act in 1999 saw some families return. Diep River has transformed. It is now a thriving business community. New apartments fill the area where the lake once flooded the fields.

St Luke’s Church remains faithful. Many original families are still represented. The congregation is now more diverse. The Sunday Holy Communion services are at 7:30 am and 9:30 am. You are asked to bring your own glass for Holy Communion.

St Luke’s Church in Diep River is more than bricks and mortar. It is a living story of community. It’s a symbol of unwavering faith. It is a beacon of hope. This church has stood the test of time. It welcomes all who seek solace and belonging.
