Ever noticed how this sturdy, round building stands apart? This is the Geographie Rundbau. It’s a unique piece of Cologne’s history. Today, we will uncover the hidden stories within its walls.

The Geographie Rundbau is part of the University of Cologne. It is home to the Geographical Institute. But this is more than just a university building. It’s a piece of Cologne’s past cleverly adapted for modern use.

Originally, the Geographie Rundbau was Fort V. It was part of the Prussian fortifications built from 1841 to 1846. These forts defended Cologne. Later, the city’s defense lines shifted. The fort became part of the Augusta Hospital in 1888.

During the Second World War, the hospital complex was nearly destroyed. The Rundbau, or round building, suffered heavy damage. After 1945, the University of Cologne acquired Fort V. The Geographical and Geological Institutes moved in. So did the Institute of Clinical Psychology.

The Geographie Rundbau underwent extensive renovations. The bombed-out upper floor was rebuilt. The basement was expanded. The entire building was modernized for research. The university was pleased to preserve a part of Cologne’s Prussian fortifications.

Inside the Geographie Rundbau, students and researchers study geography, geology, and nuclear chemistry. They have modern laboratories and seminar rooms. There is also storage for extensive rock collections. The building offers 1,920 square meters of usable space.

The Geographie Rundbau stands as a testament to Cologne’s resilience. It combines history and modernity. As you explore, imagine the soldiers. Think of the hospital patients. Picture the students who have passed through these halls. The Geographie Rundbau connects us to Cologne’s layered past. It prepares future generations for the challenges ahead.
