“A king who never wanted to be king,” a weathered miner once told me, pointing towards Jáma Václav II. Jáma Václav II. is not some forgotten king’s residence, but a relic of a different kind of power – the power of industry. This abandoned mineshaft echoes with the ghosts of miners, the clang of pickaxes, and the rumble of coal cars. Jáma Václav II. wasn’t always its name. Originally known as “Důl č. I” and later “Alpinka,” it was rechristened in 1927, possibly in honor of Saint Wenceslas Day and the millennium of his birth. The mine’s history intertwines with the political shifts of the 20th century. Initially owned by the Austrian Alpine Montan Company, it was purchased by the Czechoslovakian state in 1926. Later, it fell under the control of the Čs. Zbrojovka arms factory and then the Northern Ferdinand Railway, before being nationalized in 1946. The mine was a vital part of the Ostrava-Karviná coalfields, a region rich in black gold. Jáma Václav II. extracted coal from the northernmost section of the Petrvald Basin, a geological treasure trove. Imagine the strenuous labor of men tunneling deep into the earth, following the veins of coal that fueled a nation’s growth. But progress, like the earth itself, shifts and changes. In 1955, Jáma Václav II was merged with the nearby Evžen mine, forming a new entity named Čs. Pionýr. This ambitious project, envisioned as a consolidation of power and efficiency, aimed to transfer the heart of mining operations to Jáma Václav II. However, fate, like a fault line, intervened. In 1966, a coal surplus and changing economic forecasts led to the abrupt closure of Jáma Václav II in 1967. The once bustling mineshaft fell silent, its future entombed in the earth it had served. Standing before Jáma Václav II, we see not just a hole in the ground, but a portal to a vanished era. It’s a reminder that even the mightiest of industries can be rendered obsolete, leaving behind only echoes of their former glory.
