Kroon se Bos is a hidden gem. It’s perfect for a relaxing day outdoors. People often seek refuge here from the city’s hustle.
Kamieskroon’s origins trace back to the 1860s. It began 17 kilometers north of its current location. Originally, it was known as Bowesdorp. Today Bowesdorp is a ghost town.
In 1850, the Dutch Reformed parish needed a church. They chose a site on ‘Wilgenhoutskloof’ farm. The first church in Namaqualand was completed in 1864. The village grew slowly until 1897. Moses Schuur opened a shop and built a hotel. A post office, police station, and prison followed. Bowesdorp seemed on the path to prosperity.
Springbok’s growing importance endangered Bowesdorp’s future. Parsons preferred Springbok. In 1919, Dr. W. P. Steenkamp had a church built there. This was a blow to Bowesdorp.
In 1922, Steenkamp suggested discontinuing repairs to the Bowesdorp church. He cited high costs. He proposed a new church in a more suitable location. This location should have more water and space.
A new church was completed in 1924. It was on the road to Garies. The post office, police station, and shops moved there too. Kamieskroon, the new village, arose. That was Bowesdorp’s deathblow. Plots originally costing R6 140 sold for very little. Adriaan Visser bought most of the property. He had been a constable in Bowesdorp. The former village became his farm.
A signpost marks the ghost town’s site. Ruins remain. They include the church, hotel, police station, and prison of Bowesdorp.
‘Kamies’ may come from the Nama word ‘kam’. This means two. It refers to the mountain’s twin peaks. The ‘Kroon’ or Pass features a 330-meter peak. A huge cleft rock crowns it. It is one kilometer from the village.
Kamieskroon is one of Namaqualand’s most scenic towns. There are three interesting mountain peaks. They are Kardou, Boesmankop, and Sneeukop. Sneeukop is the second highest point in Namaqualand. It stands 1591 meters tall.
Near Kamieskroon, the grave of Charles James Darter exists. Darter was part of the British Army. His grave is north of Kamieskroon on the N7. It is referred to as the smallest piece of Britain. A pepper tree grows beside the grave.
