Opened in 2022, Rezervace Dja at Prague Zoo isn’t just a building. It’s a journey. It’s a meticulously crafted experience designed to transport you to the heart of the Congo Basin. Rezervace Dja takes its name from a biosphere reserve in Cameroon. This is where Prague Zoo’s “Wandering Bus” project brings education and awareness about wildlife conservation to local communities. As you step inside, the air hangs heavy with humidity. The sounds of the rainforest surround you, a symphony of chirps, croaks, and rustling leaves. The central part of Rezervace Dja mimics a lush tropical rainforest teeming with life. Look up and you’ll see vibrant green foliage. Over a hundred plant species thrive within this carefully controlled environment, creating a truly immersive experience. This incredible living roof even won an award in 2023. Rezervace Dja houses a family group of western lowland gorillas, including the dominant male Kisumu and Duni, the daughter of the famous Prague gorilla Moja. They share their impressive indoor and outdoor enclosures with Angolan colobus monkeys. The attention to detail within Rezervace Dja is astounding. There’s a replica of a Cameroonian school classroom. It’s built with specially shaped bricks, backlit to mimic the windows of African schools. The walls are even stylized with smudges of red dust, just like the real thing. Original posters from Cameroon adorn the walls, adding another layer of authenticity. But Rezervace Dja isn’t just about gorillas. It’s home to a fascinating array of other species. For the first time at Prague Zoo, visitors can see straw-coloured fruit bats. You can also encounter various invertebrates, such as the red-legged golden orb-web spider and the horrid king assassin bug. Other species, like De Brazza’s monkeys, have made a reappearance at the zoo after a long absence. Rezervace Dja stands as a testament to Prague Zoo’s commitment to conservation. It’s a place where education and immersion combine to create an unforgettable encounter with the wonders of the Congo Basin.
