Have you ever heard the story of the little wooden puppets, Spejbl and Hurvínek? They were once the stars of a famous theatre in Prague, named the Divadlo U Hasičů – the Theatre by the Firemen. But they weren’t the only act to grace this stage. The Divadlo U Hasičů, found on Římská Street, has a rich history, a colourful tapestry of theatrical performances reaching back nearly a century.
Built in 1927 and 1928, the theatre was originally part of the Czech Firemen’s Association building. Imagine the bustling life that once unfolded within those walls. You might hear the clanging of fire engines, the excited chatter of firemen, and the echoing melodies of operettas.
For a few years, the theatre housed the Malá Operetta or the Small Operetta, followed by the famous puppet show of Spejbl and Hurvínek. The couple behind the puppets, Josef Skupa and his wife, were forced to join the communist party after World War II to continue their show. The puppets called the theatre home until the theatre was sold in 1995. The puppet show is now in a different theatre. The Divadlo U Hasičů still stands with its old charm – a testament to the enduring power of theatre and its ability to adapt to changing times.
It’s easy to imagine the lively atmosphere of the past, the vibrant costumes, the laughter of the audience. Today, the Divadlo U Hasičů continues to be a vibrant cultural hub. This stage now hosts a mix of theatre performances, musical concerts, and community events. You can still feel the legacy of the past, hear the echoes of laughter, and witness the magic unfold in this historic corner of Prague.
