South Horizons Phase 2 a vibrant community nestled on Ap Lei Chau. Its story begins long before the gleaming high-rises. Imagine a time when this land was occupied by hillside houses and farmlands. A quiet sea bay once lapped at the shore. Then came the Ap Lei Chau Power Station a behemoth of industry. It roared to life in 1968 providing electricity for the burgeoning city. Alongside it stood a Shell oil depot. This industrial landscape transformed the area’s character. The power station’s generators eventually moved to Lamma Island in 1989. The oil depot closed in the late 1980s. However a significant incident left a lasting mark. In 1973 a foundation failure caused 3600 metric tons of oil to spill into Picnic Bay and Aberdeen Harbour. This environmental disaster highlighted the fragility of the natural world.
The transformation of South Horizons Phase 2 began in the early 1990s. Hutchison Whampoa a major Hong Kong developer envisioned a new type of community. South Horizons was conceived as a ‘garden city’ a residential haven blending nature and modern living. Construction spanned several years. From 1993 to 1995 thirty-four residential towers rose from the former industrial site. They range from 25 to 42 stories tall. The project’s scale was immense. Over 9800 residential units were created. South Horizons Phase 2 along with the other phases formed a thriving community. Today it houses a significant portion of Ap Lei Chau’s population.
South Horizons Phase 2 is more than just apartments. It boasts impressive amenities. Marina Square West and East are bustling shopping centers. Residents enjoy a harbor-front promenade offering stunning views. There are multiple swimming pools playgrounds and a residents’ club. Sports facilities include tennis courts a golf driving range and an indoor sports complex. Schools and kindergartens are also within easy reach. The area’s landscape earned accolades. Phases II through IV received a silver award for landscape design in 2004. The award recognized the careful integration of greenery and thoughtful planning. Today South Horizons Phase 2 is a testament to thoughtful development. It’s a harmonious blend of modern living and environmental awareness.
The opening of the MTR’s South Horizons station in 2016 further enhanced connectivity. Exit B of the station directly serves South Horizons Phase 2. Residents now have quick access to the rest of Hong Kong. The station’s artwork adds to the area’s cultural appeal. ‘Tree Shadow in the Gridline’ graces the glass walls of exits A and B. ‘Soaring Horizon’ a mosaic created by local children adorns the platform. This art subtly connects the indoors and outdoors. It reflects the community’s vibrant spirit and its connection to the sea. South Horizons Phase 2 is not simply a place to live it’s a place to experience. It tells the story of transformation progress and community spirit in Hong Kong.
