Haven’t you wondered about the final resting place for those without a name? Sandy Ridge Public Cemetery stands as a poignant testament to lives unknown. It is a place where stories end without a clear beginning.

Sandy Ridge Public Cemetery opened in 1950. It provides a final home for unclaimed remains. These remains were moved from cemeteries that closed. These included Kai Lung Wan East Cemetery and New Kowloon Cemetery No.7.

Originally, Sandy Ridge Public Cemetery was part of a Frontier Closed Area. A permit was needed to enter. However, since January 4, 2016, no permit is required. The area is no longer restricted.

The cemetery is divided into coffin and cremation sections. The coffin section sits atop a hill. Small stones mark each burial. Each stone shows only the burial year and a number. Names are absent. There are no photographs.

After seven years, coffins are exhumed. The remains are cremated. Ashes are placed in the cremation section on another hill. The ashes are buried under the same stone. The stone displays the year of burial.

In 2021, plans were announced to expand Sandy Ridge Cemetery. The expansion aims to create over 200,000 niche plots. It also seeks to facilitate 17,800 annual cremations.

The Democratic Alliance voiced concerns. They suggested the land could better serve collaboration with Shenzhen. Despite this, officials emphasized the need for the expansion. They cited a shortage of cemetery facilities.

Sandy Ridge Cemetery is managed by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department. It sits near Man Kam To and Lo Wu Control Point. It lies on the slopes between Sandy Ridge and Lo Wu Station Road. It is a silent city of unmarked lives. It is a reminder of those who passed without recognition. Their stories rest here.
