Remember that the name St. Mary’s Church has been used for different churches in Hong Kong.
Ever think about how a school began with a church? I’m talking about SKH St. Mary’s Church. It has a fascinating story. It intertwines faith and education in Hong Kong.
Back in 1963 a group of dedicated educators from St. Mary’s Church founded a school. They called it St. Mary’s Church Secondary School. It was a project born from the church’s commitment. They wanted to promote education. They wanted to meet the needs of primary school graduates.
The school’s mission focused on two goals. These were “knowing the truth” and “practicing the way of the Lord.” The school board and parishioners worked hard to start the secondary school. They built a new school building. St. Mary’s Church Secondary School officially opened in September 1964.
Initially the school was private. But in 1982 it transformed. It became a government-subsidized English secondary school. Over time it developed into a school for both boys and girls.
As the 21st century arrived the school embraced curriculum reform. They faced new demands. The old school building in Causeway Bay became too small.
In February 2005 the Education and Manpower Bureau allocated a new modern school building. Dr. Mok Hing Yiu made a generous donation. It helped fund the new school’s development. The school was renamed St. Mary’s Church Mok Hing Yiu Secondary School. This marked Dr. Mok’s good deed.
The school’s vision focuses on Christian education. They teach students to understand life’s meaning. They do this through biblical truths. The school aims to build good character. It encourages students to learn to reach the truth.
SKH St. Mary’s Church Mok Hing Yiu College practices holistic education. It teaches students to build good character. The school provides a quality education.
They promote bi-literacy and tri-lingualism. This ensures students master communication skills. They also learn to respect and care for others. The school offers many activities. These help students explore their potential. They learn to challenge themselves. They pursue excellence. Through learning experiences students maximize their strengths. They build a foundation for their future.
The school has planted 14 cherry trees. These trees remind students to seize the good days. The magnificent cherry blossoms appear only once a year. SKH St. Mary’s Church continues its mission. It witnesses God’s love. It serves people through education.
