In 1316, a name first appeared in local records. Kročehlavy. This unassuming village, nestled within the Czech landscape, held a secret. Kročehlavy wasn’t just a quaint collection of houses. It was a place whose very name sparked debate and curiosity. Kročehlavy, now a bustling suburb of Kladno, has a rich history interwoven with the growth of its parent city. Some believe the name Kročehlavy is a distortion of “Krotiglavy,” meaning a place where people tamed heads. This could refer to animal herders or, perhaps more intriguingly, a place where people’s rebellious spirits were quelled. Another theory links the name to a local ruler, Kročehlav or Kročihlava, adding a touch of personal history to the mix. The earliest records place members of the lower Czech nobility in Kročehlavy, hinting at its significance even then. By the 17th century, the entire village, comprising seven farmsteads and cottages, belonged to the Žďárskýs of Žďár. A manor house was established, later serving as a base for the lord’s gamekeeper. Kročehlavy continued to thrive, becoming increasingly linked to Kladno’s industrial expansion. The discovery of coal in 1847 marked a turning point. It was in Kročehlavy that Jan Váňa struck the main Kladno coal seam, fueling the region’s rapid development and attracting a surge in population. The village, once home to a mere 130 inhabitants, witnessed exponential growth. This boom led to the establishment of a new brewery in 1855, a testament to Kročehlavy’s burgeoning community. Kročehlavy was officially elevated to town status in 1931. This coincided with the consecration of the newly built Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Despite this milestone, Kročehlavy never received its own coat of arms. It was soon absorbed into Kladno, first during the Protectorate, briefly regained independence after liberation, and then permanently merged in 1948. Today, Kročehlavy, with its approximately 35,000 inhabitants, stands as a testament to its resilient past. It remains a vital part of Kladno’s story. Its unusual name, a source of ongoing speculation, serves as a constant reminder of the mysteries and stories embedded within this vibrant community.
