Is it peaceful here, wouldn’t you say? The gentle rustling of leaves, the quiet murmur of birdsong – this is Nordfriedhof, Cologne’s tranquil giant. Opened in 1896, Nordfriedhof was created to ease the burden on the then-central Melaten Cemetery. Don’t mistake its relative youth for a lack of stories though. Nordfriedhof holds within its grounds a microcosm of Cologne’s history, echoing with the lives of those at rest here. It was designed by Adolf Kowallek, Cologne’s garden director at the time, who drew inspiration from Hamburg’s grand Ohlsdorfer Friedhof. He envisioned a park-like cemetery, a place of serenity and reflection, and indeed, Nordfriedhof is that. As you wander the paths, you’ll notice the architectural diversity of the memorials. Grand neoclassical monuments stand as testaments to prominent Cologne families, like the striking travertine memorial of Robert Gerling, founder of the Gerling Insurance Group. Yet, tucked away amongst these grand structures, you’ll find simpler markers, each one a whisper of a life lived. And speaking of whispers, you might hear the name Trude Herr uttered with reverence. The beloved German actress, known for her comedic timing and her big heart, rests here. Her grave, often adorned with flowers, is a testament to the enduring love she inspired in so many. Nordfriedhof is a place where history and nature intertwine. It’s a place to ponder the past, appreciate the present, and find a moment of peace in the heart of a bustling city.
