Did you know that Ma Tau Kok once boasted a bustling gas works? Right here in this seemingly unremarkable area stood two gas plants. The first operated from 1935 until around 1994. Imagine the clatter of machinery the smell of coal and gas. Today the Grand Waterfront building stands where this industrial giant once thrived. A second gas works rose west of To Kwa Wan Road in 1956. It later switched from coal to naphtha. Now it’s a storage facility with a small backup plant. This quiet corner of Ma Tau Kok holds a surprising industrial past.

Ma Tau Kok a mixed industrial and residential area has a rich history. It’s located north of To Kwa Wan southeast of Ma Tau Chung and southwest of the former Kai Tak Airport. This area was once a cape in Kowloon Bay. It offered stunning views of the Sacred Hill and the mouth of Ma Tau Chung. The area’s name even lent itself to a prominent road Ma Tau Kok Road.

In 1911 Ma Tau Kok’s population was a modest 212 with 145 men. This small community was part of a larger vibrant area. The area changed dramatically during the 20th century. Industrial development transformed the landscape. Yet this small village area persisted becoming a place where the old and the new coexist. The transformation of the cattle depot and slaughterhouse into the Cattle Depot Artist Village perfectly illustrates this fascinating blend. This village now showcases art projects and exhibitions breathing new life into the past.

Transportation options have also evolved through the years. The Kowloon City Ferry Pier and the Ma Tau Kok Public Pier provide water access. Sun Ferry operates a regular service to North Point. A nearby bus terminus ensures easy land travel. But there is more to discover here. The area is part of Primary One Admission School Net 34. This is important for families with young children. Farm Road Government Primary School and Ma Tau Chung Government Primary School are two notable institutions in the area.

Despite its modern development Ma Tau Kok retains a captivating past. Its history is intertwined with that of Kowloon Bay. The changing geography the evolving industries and the enduring spirit of its residents all create a unique story. Take a moment to picture the transformation. The old gas works the thriving port the artists village. Each part has woven itself into the rich tapestry of Ma Tau Kok’s history. This place is more than just a suburb. It is a fascinating blend of industry art and history. It’s a living testament to Hong Kong’s dynamic past and present.
