Did you know Hong Kong Shue Yan University was once a humble three-story house? That’s right. Hong Kong Shue Yan University started small. In 1971 Dr Henry Hu and Dr Chung Chi-yung had a dream. They wanted to establish a university. Their vision was to offer a different kind of higher education. They believed in cultivating virtues and broadening horizons. They worried about the impact of the Cultural Revolution on traditional Chinese values. They invested their life savings. They bought a house on Sing Woo Road in Happy Valley. This became the first campus of Hong Kong Shue Yan University.

The early years were challenging for Hong Kong Shue Yan University. The Hong Kong government was interested but cautious. Shue Yan College refused to adopt a government-mandated three-year degree program. They insisted on a four-year curriculum. This meant no government funding. The university was truly private. It offered a path to higher education for students who couldn’t get into other universities. This was a major contribution to Hong Kong society.

A turning point came in 1978. The Hong Kong government granted land on Braemar Hill. This allowed the construction of a permanent campus. The new Hong Kong Shue Yan University campus was completed in 1985. It was a significant achievement. More buildings were added later. A library complex followed in 1995. A residential complex opened in 2005. A research complex was completed in 2016. Each addition expanded the university’s capacity. It enhanced the student experience.

In 2006 Hong Kong Shue Yan University reached a landmark. It became the first private university in Hong Kong. This was through a resolution of the Executive Council. This event highlighted the university’s persistence and success. The university continued to grow. It added many new programs and partnerships. It forged collaborations with universities in the UK and Australia. It developed its own unique identity.

Today Hong Kong Shue Yan University stands tall. Its Braemar Hill campus offers a breathtaking view of Victoria Harbour. It is a thriving institution. It embodies the founders’ vision. It continues to provide a high-quality education. It remains a testament to perseverance and dedication. Hong Kong Shue Yan University is a true success story. A story of vision and hard work. A story worthy of celebration.
