Might a pond be a tribute? Absolutely. Today we explore the Adenauerweiher.
This leisurely spot offers a breath of fresh air near the RheinEnergieSTADION. The Adenauerweiher provides a tranquil escape. It is perfect for families and individual guests alike. Even pushchairs can easily navigate the area.
But who was Adenauer? The pond was created when the city forest expanded in the 1920s. It was later named after Cologne’s Lord Mayor, Konrad Adenauer.
Konrad Hermann Joseph Adenauer was born in Cologne in 1876. He served as the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1963. From 1946 to 1966, he led the Christian Democratic Union. This party became a dominant force in Germany under his leadership.
Adenauer was a devout Catholic. He was a leading politician in the Weimar Republic. He served as Mayor of Cologne from 1917 to 1933. He also presided over the Prussian State Council. He focused on recovery instead of denazification. He fostered close relationships with France, the UK, and the US.
During his time in office, Adenauer rebuilt the West German economy after World War II. He made it a central part of Europe again. He championed a market-based liberal democracy. He ensured stability, international respect, and economic prosperity.
Adenauer worked intensely and possessed sharp political instincts. A staunch anti-communist, he committed to an Atlanticist foreign policy. He aimed to restore West Germany’s position on the world stage. Adenauer helped reestablish national military forces in West Germany in the mid-1950s. He joined NATO and signed the Treaty of Rome. Adenauer is regarded as a Founding Father of the European Union.
Before his chancellorship, Adenauer left his mark on Cologne. During World War I, he collaborated with the army to support the Western Front. He prioritized the civilian food supply. This helped residents avoid the worst shortages. In 1918, he invented the Cologne sausage. It was a soy-based sausage meant to feed the city.
However, the Imperial Patent Office rejected Adenauer’s meat-free sausage idea. He eventually secured a patent in Austria.
After being dismissed as Mayor of Cologne by the British, Adenauer devoted himself to building the CDU.
Now, let’s return to the Adenauerweiher itself. A path circles this six-hectare lake. Many people enjoy walking or jogging here. Meadows surround the lake. From here, you can reach the Decksteiner Weiher. The adjacent Jahnwiese features a monument to Jahn, the father of gymnastics. It was unveiled in 1928.
The walk from the RheinEnergieSTADION stop to Adenauerweiher takes about 15 minutes. Tram line 1 will get you there. Take some time to refuel with fresh air at the Adenauerweiher. Take a moment to reflect on Konrad Adenauer’s legacy as you enjoy the scenery. His influence shaped Cologne and Germany itself. This pond serves as a reminder of his contributions.
